Most people assume a resin lamp is poured in one go, like a candle. It is not, and the difference explains almost everything about how these objects look and what they cost.
What a resin lamp actually is
A resin lamp is a scene suspended inside a solid block of cured epoxy, lit from beneath by an LED set into a base — usually hardwood. The resin does two jobs at once. It preserves the scene, and it acts as a light pipe, carrying illumination up and through the piece so the whole block glows rather than just the bottom edge.
That second job is why resin is used at all. Set the same miniature scene in glass and you get a paperweight. Set it in resin over a light source and you get depth.
The process, step by step
1. Composing the scene
Before any resin is mixed, the scene is laid out dry: the base terrain, sand or stone, the figures, the position of each element at the depth it will eventually sit. This is the only stage that can be undone. Once resin covers a figure, its position is permanent.
2. The first pour
A thin base layer goes down and cures alone. Thin is deliberate. Epoxy cures exothermically — it generates its own heat — and a thick pour traps that heat in the middle, which causes cracking, cloudiness, or in the worst case a piece that cooks itself. Depth has to be built up, not poured in.
3. Layer, place, layer
This is the bulk of the ten to fifteen days. Each layer cures for several hours to a full day. Between layers, elements are placed at their intended depth: a dragon's wing here, a diver two centimetres higher, a trail of bubbles behind it. A piece with real dimensional depth might take eight to twelve separate pours.
Colour goes in at this stage too, tinted into specific layers rather than mixed through the whole block. That is how a fire dragon gets amber low down and clarity above it, or how ocean pieces darken with depth the way actual water does.
4. Demoulding and shaping
Out of the mould, the block is oversized and dull — nothing like the finished object. The outer surface has a skin that has to come off.
5. Sanding
The least glamorous and most decisive stage. The block is worked through progressively finer grits, often from around 400 up past 3000, wet-sanding throughout. Skip a grit and you leave scratches the next grit cannot remove. Rush it and the surface stays permanently hazy. Clarity in a finished resin lamp is almost entirely a function of patient sanding.
6. Polishing
Compound and a soft wheel bring the surface from matte to optical clarity. This is the point where the piece suddenly looks like the photographs.
7. Base, wiring, testing
The hardwood base is cut, sanded and finished separately, then routed for the LED and its cable. The light is fitted, wired, and the assembled lamp is run through every mood setting and left on for an extended burn-in before it is packed.
Why it takes ten to fifteen days
Because resin cures on its own schedule and there is no way to hurry it. Force a layer before it is ready and you trap bubbles or get a soft spot. Sand too early and the surface clouds as it continues to cure underneath. The timeline is dictated by the material, not by the workshop.
Hand-poured, cast, and 3D printed are not the same thing
You will see all three sold as resin lamps.
- Hand-poured pieces are layered individually, so figures sit at genuine varying depths and no two are identical.
- Cast pieces come from a production mould in one or two pours. Fast and cheap, but the scene is flat — everything sits at the same plane.
- 3D printed pieces are printed in resin rather than poured. Precise, repeatable, and generally opaque, so they light very differently: the shape glows rather than the space around it.
Why hand-poured costs more
It is labour, not materials. The resin in a mid-sized lamp is a modest cost. What you are paying for is ten to fifteen days of intermittent attention from someone who has to be present at the right moments — and the accepted reality that a proportion of pieces fail at the sanding stage and are written off entirely.
The upside of that arithmetic is that the piece on your desk is genuinely singular. The bubble trail behind your diver drifts differently from anyone else's.
