Cured resin is durable but it is not glass, and the products that work on glass are precisely the ones that damage it. The good news is that correct care is almost absurdly simple.
Routine cleaning
Dust with a dry microfibre cloth. For fingerprints or smudges, dampen the cloth with warm water — a single drop of mild dish soap if genuinely needed — wipe, then dry immediately with a second dry cloth.
Always unplug first and let the lamp cool. Wipe in straight lines rather than circles; circular motions on a polished surface leave swirl marks that catch the light later.
What will permanently damage it
This list matters more than the cleaning method, because these are one-way mistakes.
- Isopropyl alcohol, and anything containing it. Most glass cleaners and screen wipes do. Alcohol attacks cured epoxy and produces fine surface crazing — a web of hairline cracks. It cannot be polished out.
- Ammonia. The active ingredient in blue window cleaner. It clouds resin.
- Acetone or nail-polish remover. Softens and dissolves the surface immediately.
- Abrasive cleaners and scouring pads. Even a magic-eraser style sponge is a fine abrasive and will dull a polished face.
- Paper towel. Wood pulp is harder than you think and creates micro-scratches over time. Microfibre only.
- Furniture polish and silicone sprays. These leave a film that hazes and attracts dust.
If you have already used glass cleaner once, do not panic — a single wipe rarely does visible harm. It is repeated exposure that crazes the surface.
Restoring shine
A dulled resin lamp can usually be brought back. A plastic polish intended for acrylic or headlights, applied sparingly with a microfibre cloth and buffed gently, will lift light hazing. Test on the base or an inconspicuous face first, and use very little — these products are mild abrasives, which is exactly why they work and exactly why restraint matters.
Deep scratches need wet-sanding and repolishing, which is workshop work rather than a home job.
Preventing yellowing
Every epoxy resin yellows eventually under UV. Quality resin contains inhibitors that slow it dramatically, but nothing stops it entirely.
The single most effective thing you can do is keep the piece out of direct sunlight. A lamp on a south-facing windowsill will yellow noticeably faster than the identical lamp two metres into the room. Indoor LED lighting emits almost no UV and is not a concern.
Heat and placement
Keep resin away from sustained heat: radiators, above a fireplace, the top of an amplifier or games console, a car in summer. Standard epoxy softens somewhere around 50–60°C, and warping is irreversible.
The LED inside is not the problem — it generates negligible heat. External heat sources are.
Are resin lamps fragile?
Less than glass, more than they look. Cured resin is tough and slightly flexible, so it tends to chip rather than shatter. But these pieces are heavy, and a fall onto tile or stone can chip an edge or crack a corner. A chipped edge can be sharp.
Practically: keep it away from the edge of a desk, and if you have cats, further back than you think.
How long will one last?
Decades, with sensible care. There is no wear mechanism in a solid block of cured epoxy — no moving parts, nothing to degrade. The two things that age are cosmetic yellowing, which is slow and gradual, and the LED.
Good LEDs are rated for 25,000 to 50,000 hours. Run eight hours a night, that is roughly eight to seventeen years before noticeable dimming. On our pieces the light module is accessible through the base and replaceable, so an aged LED is a repair rather than the end of the lamp.
Moving or storing it
Wrap in a soft cloth first, then bubble wrap — bubble wrap pressed directly against polished resin for months can leave impressions. Store upright, somewhere temperature-stable, never a hot loft or a damp garage.
