Short answer: a fully cured resin lamp is safe to keep in a bedroom, safe to touch, and safe to leave running overnight provided it uses an LED. The safety warnings you have probably read are about uncured liquid resin, which is a workshop material and a genuinely different thing from a finished lamp.
This gets muddled constantly, and it is not the buyer's fault — search for resin safety and you will land in craft forums discussing respirators and skin sensitisation. All of that is real. Almost none of it applies to the object sitting on your nightstand.
Cured and uncured resin are two different materials
Liquid epoxy resin is an irritant. Mixed and still wet, both the resin and the hardener can sensitise skin on contact, and the vapour is unpleasant. Anyone pouring it properly wears nitrile gloves and works with ventilation. Every alarming thing written about resin describes this stage.
Once resin has cured, the chemical reaction is finished. What remains is an inert thermoset plastic — the same family of material used in food-contact countertop coatings and in dentistry. There is nothing left to off-gas and nothing that leaches at room temperature. Chemically, a finished resin lamp is about as eventful as an acrylic picture frame.
There is a simple test: smell it. A properly cured piece is odourless. If a resin object still smells sharp or solvent-like weeks after it arrives, it was under-cured. That is a manufacturing failure rather than an inherent property, and it is a fair reason to send it back.
Do resin lamps get hot?
An LED resin lamp gets slightly warm at the base and nowhere near hot enough to matter. LEDs convert most of their energy to light rather than heat, and the small amount they do produce dissipates through the wood base.
The genuine risk is the wrong bulb. Standard epoxy begins to soften somewhere around 50–60°C, which no LED will reach but an incandescent or halogen bulb in an enclosed space absolutely can. Sustained heat can cloud resin, yellow it faster, or in a badly designed piece warp it. This is why every lamp we make is LED and USB-powered, and why you should never retrofit a resin lamp with a hotter bulb than it shipped with, even if the fitting accepts one.
Can you leave one on overnight?
Yes — with an LED, this is exactly what they are designed for. A USB-powered resin night light draws a couple of watts, produces negligible heat, and has no filament to fail. Ours are built to run as bedside lights, which means running for eight hours at a stretch.
The sensible caveats are the ones that apply to any small lamp: use the supplied adapter or a reputable USB source, do not drape it with fabric, and do not run it directly against a wall where warm air cannot move.
Are they safe around children?
Cured resin is safe to touch, so the honest cautions are physical rather than chemical.
- Weight. A resin-and-hardwood lamp is heavier than it looks. On a low shelf or a bedside table a toddler can reach, that mass is the actual hazard.
- The cable. A USB lead near a cot is a strangulation risk regardless of what it powers. Route it behind furniture.
- Breakage. Resin does not shatter into fine shards the way glass does, but a heavy piece dropped on a hard floor can chip, and a chipped edge can be sharp.
For a nursery specifically, wall-mounted or plug-in-only lighting is the safer category. For an older child's room or an adult bedroom, a resin lamp is a reasonable choice.
What about yellowing?
Cosmetic, not a safety issue. All epoxy yellows eventually under ultraviolet light. Good resin includes UV inhibitors that slow it considerably, and keeping a piece out of direct sunlight slows it further. It has no bearing on whether the lamp is safe to have around.
Three things worth checking before you buy
- Is it LED? If the listing does not say, ask. This is the single most important safety question and the easiest to answer.
- Does it smell? On arrival, open it and use your nose. Odourless means properly cured.
- Is the electrical side certified? The resin is the easy part. The adapter and wiring are where corners get cut on cheap marketplace listings — look for a named plug standard rather than an unbranded block.
